Lower your Rent

The legally maximum rent for a room or an apartment outside the "free sector" is limited. When you rent a room, there is a point system with which you can calculate the maximum rent you can be expected to pay. If you pay more than the maximum rent, you can ask your landlord to lower your rent. Note that only if you apply for a lower rent within three months after moving in, the rent lowering counts from moving in on. If you are renting a room and lives with your landlord or landlady, then remember that he or she has nine months to kick you out without any reason at all. After these nine months you will have your "tenant's protection." Apartments have a different system for maximum rent. You can get information about this at the "huurcommissie," the "rent-commission."
An often used excuse by slumlords is that when you have agreed on a certain rent in your contract, you have to pay that rent and the lower rent story is not valid. This is clear nonsense. Minimum wages then could be avoided with the same construction, by "signing" for two guilders an hour. These laws have a good reason.
